Fractions and mixed numbers — whole expressions, reducing and common denominators, every step as in a school notebook

Fraction problem

Insert into the formula:

Write a mixed number with a space: 1 2/3 is one and two thirds. Divide with “:” or “/”.

Try:

GCD and LCM of several numbers

GCD is the greatest common divisor: the largest number that divides all the numbers without a remainder. LCM is the least common multiple: the smallest number divisible by each of them. For example: GCD(12, 18) = 6, LCM(12, 18) = 36.

📚 Theory: how to work with fractions

Addition and subtraction: bring the fractions to a common denominator — most conveniently the LCM (least common multiple) of the denominators. Multiply each fraction so that the denominators match, then add the numerators.

Multiplication: numerator by numerator, denominator by denominator. Division is multiplication by the flipped (reciprocal) fraction.

Reduction: divide the numerator and the denominator by their GCD (greatest common divisor). The GCD is easy to find with Euclid’s algorithm: replace the larger number with the remainder of dividing it by the smaller one until the remainder is zero.

GCD and LCM are related: LCM(a, b) = a · b / GCD(a, b).

You can enter integers (5), fractions (3/4), mixed numbers (1 2/3) and decimals (0.5 becomes 1/2). Give several fractions separated by “;” and the calculator will reduce them, bring them to a common denominator and put them in ascending order.
